Ran in:
% start with zero matrix
n=3;
a = zeros(3)
a = 3×3
0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
% random entries along diagonal
a(1:n+1:n*n) = randi(100, [n 1])
a = 3×3
22 0 0 0 87 0 0 0 57
% alternatively
a = diag(randi(100,[n,1]))
a = 3×3
41 0 0 0 86 0 0 0 96
