longitude and latitude plot map

I am trying to plot a map using a file i hjave downloaded
I have to asign two columns of the loadedd array to different variables (the first column is longitutde and second column is latitude.)
i have to then plot the data as a black linje. and add gridlines.
can anyone help me with this? I am lost on where to begin

plot(lon,lat,'k-')
grid on
xlabel('longitude')
ylabel('latitude')
