License server problems in recent releases for Mac OS

I am encountering a frustrating license server problem. I want to borrow licenses, but it seems the server just doesn't work in the most recent builds for Mac OS.
- R2022a: If I attempt to bring up the "Borrow Products..." server it crashes the program half the time after taking more than 1 minute to attempt to load it. When it doesn't crash the program, it has Error code: -111, Error message: ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED.
- R2021b: It always produces Error code: -111, Error message: ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED.
- R2021a: It successfully loads the Borrow Products server. However, the server Never returns licenses automatically (you can borrow for 60 days?), and with automatic borrowing on it will reborrow after the prior one expired, but the prior one will still exist, so then it will keep giving you the annoying message about Matlab will make 10 more attempts to contact the license server or it will shut down because it thinks it has an expired borrowed license.
I get that Matlab has to enforce real users vs pirates, but this license server problem is breaking the program. A lot of people work remotely and I am unable to always be directly connected to my remote institution's servers.
Clearly it is not a problem that I can't contact my institution's servers because otherwise R2021a also wouldn't work, but it does. And yes, R2021a does work, after you go through a process of remembering what you did 3 months ago where you mannually had to return old licenses. Maybe there is no automatic returning of licenses? - but that just seems like common sense. Why wouldn't you seemlessly return expired licenses so that your program isn't threatening to crash itself?
And not ideal that I can't use more recent builds.
