Cannot built Matlab.engine python package

I am trying to build python 2 matlab.engine package on Mac I tried Ventura and BigSur with the following matlab versions: matlab_R2022b_maci64 and matlab_R2022a_maci64
Installing for Python 3 works but for Python 2.7 does not even though Python 2.7 is listed as supported. The error I am getting is below. Any hints to resolve this?

File "setup.py", line 67, in _find_arch
raise EnvironmentError('The installation of MATLAB is corrupted. '
EnvironmentError: The installation of MATLAB is corrupted. Please reinstall MATLAB or contact Technical Support for assistance.

In case someone else runs into this issue. pip installation works only with Python 3. For Python 2 use
python setup.py install
