Hello, i was wondering if there is a way to achieve the same result as xlim, and ylim with a different set of functions? I have been trying to acheive the same result in a different way, but i cant figure out how.

Those are all part of the builtin MATLAB core functionality -- of course you can (and are expected to) use them at will; that's why Mathworks incorporated them in the language.

The only time to avoid builtins would be if you're in a class and the instructor assigns a homework problem and proscribes using a builtin function as a pedgogical exercise. "MIN" and "MAX" are common examples of the type of exercise.

Plagiarism or such issues only come into play for user-written functions and/or homework where someone may post a solution -- it isn't really kosher to just paste somebody elses' complete solution for that in and turn that in as your work; you should then try to take the lessons taught and write your own solution in that case.

In general, if somebody posts an Answer on the forum to the question that is related to the original poster's work, that person providing the code expects it to be used for the purpose as the poster desires...if it is considered propretary or other restrictions on its use, the poster will make such known. That rarely (if ever) happens as Answers is an open and volunteer forum.

There are all the examples of various application areas and types of problems -- what else is in open forum I'm not sure; there are MATLAB-based books from the "MATLAB for Dummies" series to very expensive -- and I've never looked at a one of them. The link to MATLAB books at the TMW site is about useless to find anything because it is just a compendium of everything ever published and TMW doesn't do any except the highest-level of categorization by subject as they don't make any recomendations/screening to favor any one author over another. With 2500 entries in no particular order, it's overwhelming.

Google finds a couple of lists of "20 Best" or the like -- how good those are is anybody's guess, too...

My recommendation is to just attack whatever it is that you're trying to do with MATLAB and have at it -- you'll only get real expertise by use.

If you have no general programming training in any language, then getting some basic coding training would be beneficial as well, no matter what language.

Good point. For others who are not aware, it stands for Massive Open Online Courses. These courses tend to have a free or audit version, meaning they are open to anyone. There is typically a fee required to access graded content.

xlim and ylim work by setting the XLim and YLim properties of the current axes.

There are three major ways of setting properties:

using set(), which can potentially set multiple properties for multiple objects
using dot notation and assignment such as ax.XLim = 'auto'; only one property can be set for one object
using convenience functions such as xlim() that are implemented internally using one of the above methods
