Finding a curve within an image - tried findcircles but it didn't work

I am trying to segment some images. I have found a way to filter them and segment them pretty well in most cases, but these images occasionally have issues when my image has the edge of a hole in it. I would still like to be able to analyse these images. First image attached is a good example, second is a bad example. Can anyone help me out? If anyone has any advice as how to go about segmenting these images in general better as well it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lara,
From your description, I understand that you are trying to detect partially visible circles in your images along with complete ones. I suggest you to experiment with Sensitivity parameter of imfindcircles. Increasing the ‘Sensitivity’ detects more circular objects including partially obscured ones.
You may trying different values and check the detections.
