The correct way to eliminate the hang is to ensure the 'LocalDataConnectionMethod' field of the FTP object is set to 'active' in MATLAB like so:

ftpobj = ftp(ip_addr,username,password);
ftpobj.LocalDataConnectionMethod = "active";
