Trying to read .nef file in 14 bits

Hello Everyone, Im using D300s camera to take some images (.nef) and want to read them on matlab. I take the images in 14 bits but when I read them it reads in 8 bits. Does anyone knows how to read in 14 bits. I tried using imread and fread but its no help.

I used raw2rgb('image.nef') to read the 14 bit image. It creates a 16 bits data and interpolate some of the point (from 14 to 16) but overall it does the works and doesnt converts to 8 bits.
