Why do I get a "WARNING: Error while communicating with MATLAB" error when using the MATLAB extension for Visual Studio Code connected to MATLAB R2023a?

I am using MATLAB R2023a and the MATLAB extension for Visual Studio Code. The basic features of the extension work properly, but the extension cannot connect to MATLAB for using its advanced features. The output tab on Visual Studio Code gives the following warning from the MATLAB Language Server when the extension tries to connect:
(16:19:34) matlabls: Launching MATLAB...
(16:19:49) matlabls: Started MATLAB[Warn - 4:19:49 PM] (16:19:49) matlabls - WARNING: Error while communicating with MATLAB - disconnecting
Could you please help me get this up and running?

To use the advanced features of the extension, please ensure that you have configured the extension using the documentation linked below (particularly by completing the section "MATLAB Install Path Setting"):
If you still see the warning for the MATLAB Language Server even after completing the configuration steps listed in the documentation above, it is most likely because of a proxy server blocking connections to your localhost. To fix this issue, please disable the proxy entirely, or unblock all proxy connections to localhost.
