Sim Power Systems: Difference between RLC branch and Variable value components

What is the difference between using RLC Branch or using Variable Element (inductor, capacitor, resistor)? We have carried out simulations directly replacing one by another and the results are completely different (removing all parasitic elements). What could it be due to?
