How to send character form matlab to 8051 microcontroller ?

I have programmed in 8051 microcontroller(NXP P89V51RB2) if character 'a' receive turn on red light and if 'b' is received turn off it. Similarly if 'c' is received turn on Green light and for character 'd' turn it off again... So now I want to send this character with matlab 2009 to 8051 microcontroller. How to do that, some software is needed ? can some one tell me step by step procedure to do that or suggest some link.
