Is it recommended to install all of the toolboxes in Matlab ~15GB?

Hi All,
I'm install Matlab for the first time. When it comes to customize what toolboxes to install, I'm not very sure which ones could be leave out. I was wondering if it is a huge burden to install them all. Thanks for any insights.

I have many toolboxes on "my" computer, most of which I have never even though of using. They fill the tab completion list. I have only the help of a few toolboxes checked.

For an Undergraduate student, following tool boxes are necessary: Maths, statistics, image processing, compiler, signal processing, coder...
Install the rest of tool boxes as per need

MATLAB Compiler is not available to Student licenses.
I answer many questions here, but I find I rarely use MATLAB Compiler or MATLAB Coder -- basically only to answer questions from people who are using it. Simulink Coder comes up a little more often as it can be used automatically by Simulink in some of the acceleration modes when I am testing out models for people. Simulink Coder is not needed for deploying models to hardware such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
I would say that the three toolboxes I use most often are Symbolic, Image Processing, and Optimization.

So I guess my institute has spent quite a bit on the license, because I can see all the options there are to download(~15GB), including the MATLAB Compiler.

Sure. You bought them, so why wouldn't you? And with disk space at $40 per terabyte now (recent ad I saw), 15 GB is no problem at all.

I agree, GB is affordable these days and unless you're running it on a laptop/tablet without the ability to upgrade the hard drive (mackbook air, microsoft surface pro, etc.) then only install specific sets of toolboxes. Such as if you are not going to do any parallel computing or control systems then you can probably skip on the parallel computing and control systems products.
If you're starting out as a beginner like per isakson is assuming and have access to all toolboxes then I would suggest the toolboxes in the product families:
  • Math, statistics and optimization
  • Image processing and computer vision
  • code generation and verification and/or Application Deployment
+ any simulink stuff you may do.
