Sharing memory with external application in Linux

I know how to share memory between two Matlab sessions, per
http://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/import_export/share-memory-between-applications.html
But how do I share memory between Matlab and an external console application.
In Linux, I use shmget and shmat to share memory between programs, using the following redacted code:
shmid = shmget(key, SharedMemSize, 0666 | IPC_CREAT);
ShMemPtr = shmat(shmid, NULL, 0);|
How can I get Matlab to join in the act. I would like to use it to monitor my data to run a visualization front end.

Perhaps you could use http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/28572-sharedmatrix
and request to attach to the matrix with the given key?
