Visualizing an aggregation pattern properly?

So my program is giving me an aggregation pattern output whose video is available here (2nd figure) . I am pretty sure my output is correct. But the paper which I am trying to reproduce, shows aggregation patterns like below:

What I suspect is they trace the movements of the unit cells as in video and perhaps averaging it out. Please suggest me a way to visualize such an output.

Note : And I am not asking to code things for me. I am asking how to trace this cells properly or what command/way can help me do this?

I strongly believe that the paper authors would be better at answering questions about what they did than we would. Were you able to contact them? If not, you're probably on your own unless someone wants to dig into that paper and code it up for you.

I did not contacted authors. And I am not asking to code it for me. I am asking how to trace this cells properly or what command/way can help me do this?
