Compressio​n/uncompre​ssion with bzip2/bunzip not working

Hello,
I am working on a mac os X 10.9.5 and using both Matlab 2013b and Matlab 2014b. When I try to use bunzip2 or bzip2 to compress of decompress files (for example unix('bunzip2 -dk filename'), an exit status 127 is returned to the command line. However, the files bunzip2 and bzip2 are present on my computer and I can use them via the terminal. Would you have an idea of where this error could come from? Thank you very much in advance for your help.

This is probably the same basic issue as http://uk.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/230535#answer_186650 except with respect to the PATH environment variable

Thank you for your answer! I am not very familiar with shell, so could you explain a little bit more please? Does this mean I should set the PATH environment in the .matlab7rc.sh file? I am using Matlab code from am open source software and don't want do modify it.
