Please let me know what is the difference between mesh and surface plots?

As of R2014b, mesh plots return Chart Surface Objects, but surface plots return Primitive Surface Objects
Both of them are objects of type 'surface', and the only difference I can see between them (other than the order that some fields are documented) is that Chart Surface Objects have XDataSource, YDataSource, and ZDataSource properties.
