For my GUI, how can I have one button open the file then the other buttons modify that file?

handles.file_identifier = fopen('TheDestinationFile', 'w');
guidata(handles);

and then in the other routines, for example:

fprintf(handles.file_identifier, '%s\n', 'hello there we have been waiting for you');
