Hi im doing a final year project comparing sizes of palms, ill brief it as follows image of a palm after a hand injury is taken after physiotherapy an image is taken again nxt week when patient arrives for therapy another image is taken and compared with the previous image after therapy to see if any progress has been made , progress = muscles become dialated hence larger palm, this is the main idea hwoever im tryin to use matlab to compare the previous image with the current ive managed to import images see black n white , rgb histograms of the images however i dont understand quite how to maybe get all the image properties and compare them below is a sample http://www.flickr.com/photos/60171113@N05/5494147788/#/

The BW picture is not a good point to start from. It would be more helpful, if foreground and background can be distinguished automatically. E.g. if you take a photography from below a palte of glass with a black background, separating and measuring the area gets easy. Please post the RGB images.

there is a pic of the orignal RGB these images were still taken from google iamges . originally i have to scan the palm using a flat bed scanner to the computer . im wondering how i can scan the hand into the computer when the scanner top is opened. or should i get a palm scanner, any ideas?

Please post a picture which is really used for your work. It is not helpful to talk about arbitrary pictures.
Scanning a palm with a flat bed scanner is easy and accurate - where is the problem if it opens on top?
Care for a background with a non-skin-color (green, blue) to allow for a correct color separation.
