fractal_explorer problems

I recently installed my Matlab 7.0.0.27 R14 on my new Windows 7 Home Premium machine (Dell Inspiron 560). After replacing the java rte folder in the proper directory, the script fractal_explorer.m runs, but I don't know how to enter user input for the menu-selectable fractal functions requiring user input. Instead of a dialogue box, it shows me a figure descibing the parameters, but it doesn't allow input.
Has anyone used this code that could lend some advice?

The R14* versions of MATLAB are not supported for Windows 7, and are not expected to work on Windows 7 even under XP emulation mode. R2006a is the first version that is thought to be plausible to get to work under Windows 7 (or so I gather from past postings.)
