how to fix the "xlsread" function?

For some reason the "xlsread" function is not working any longer; every time I try to use "xlsread" Matlab displays the message "Busy" in the lower message bar and it never gets out of that busy mode. I tried uninstalling and installing Matlab (R2014b) and still is not working.

Check you don't have a hidden, rogue unterminated Excel session and kill it if do. Failing that, reboot and see if problem heals itself.

With Windows, you can do that by typing control-shift-Esc and looking at the Process tab.
