Time history solution of finite element structrual dynamic problem using methods other than the modal technique.

The time history solution for the aeroelastic response of helicopter requires several finite elements to capture the coupling effects. Normal approach has been to use the modal technique that allows a much larger time step. as compared to the direct integration of the equations. I am seeking information about other methods for solving the problem without invoking the modal method.
