Is there a timer function ?

I'm making a clock and i would like it to have a timer function. I was thinking if there's a way that i could create a button " Start " and the timer would start running , and then i would like it to have two " stop " buttons, one where the time that has passed would be saved in a variable , and other that would stop the timer . Can someone help me ?
