How to smoothen cropped image?

My project is to segment knee cartilage to detect the damaged cartilage. In the first step I selected ROI by using imcrop. Now I want to smoothen the cropped image so that the output after segmentation is clear.In the attached figure, left side is the cropped image and right side is the image I want to get as output. Please help me with coding. Thank u.

If you have the Image Processing Toolbox, you could use imgaussfilt.

See my demo for freehand masking, attached. To smooth, you can use imfilter() or conv2().
