Adding legends

Because of the way I am plotting my graph it is requires that I add legends manually. Is there a way to insert a custom legend? for example (on the current axis): add legend('string name','box type','line colour') or something like that?

If the default legend function does not cut it for you, maybe one of the variants found on the file exchange gets the job done:
Otherwise you might have to do your own version - or in the worst case truly manually.
