Count number of horizontal and vertical lines in an image

I am working on a project based on OCR. For the feature extraction part of our project, we need to count the number of horizontal, vertical and slanting lines in the letter. We have tried using houghlines and imfilter, but did not get satisfactory results.

It is often useful to do edge detection before using the hough transform. You might consider binarizing by using the Canny edge detection (imcanny) before applying the hough transform. Not sure if you are already doing this.
BW = edge(I,'canny');
