what is the code that is used to change a bitDepth in the image information from 16 to 12?

I am doing on medical image In particular, image name.dcm. My code uses dicom function for reading image has 12 bitDepth but it dose not read the image that has 12 bitDepth.So I do not know how I solve this problem. could help me quickly.
