Your call to surf only references a and is not affected by your second wave in b. Maybe you meant to use something like
surf(X,Y,a+b);
You appear to be calling contour correctly, but if you don't like the result, you could consider specifying the levels yourself using the fourth input. See
doc contour
for details.

I want to plot one of the waves in a different location, as well as creating a subplot for maximum amplitude shown, how would I do this?
