How do I create a function equivalent to the VLookup function of excel in Matlab?

I have data in excel which is on numeric and string type. It is related to each other with the VLOOKUP function excel. I wish to generate an equivalent functionality, which will lookup for the values in other columns and sheets of the excel workbook and provide me the data in matlab. Can you please help me out?
