Sharing data between app designer apps

How do I share data between app designer apps? Currently, I have a main gui that contains several cell arrays which contain the data that I needed. I am having a second gui that can add to the arrays. The main gui needs to be able to access this updated cell arrays.
My CS friend told me to just write the data onto a file, and have the second gui reads the data. Is there other ways to do this???
