Problem with newton's backtracking method

I need to find the minimum of a function with newton's method, my problem it's inside the backtracking of my code. When I see my teacher's explanation he would divide the "v" by 2 but if I do this the method doesn't converge. My solution is multiply by 2. Does anyone knows why is this happening? PS: My code is attached
