Feature extraction using integral projection

Kindly could you help to find a solution that crops the image using vertical and horizontal integral projection like in case of teeth extraction?
This is the image which I work on it:
I want to extract each phalanx in image, and this is the code which I use for integral projection
horizinteg=sum(fig2,2); %horizontal projection
figure(3);
plot(horizinteg,1:size(fig2,1));
figure(4);
vertinteg=sum(fig2,1);%vertical projection
plot(vertinteg);
