PS file issues in 2016a

I am now using matlab83 but would like to take advantage of features in the 2016a version. However, the graphics output is fairly different (default font sizes and types, for starters). I'm willing to work on that but the graphics rendering is clearly messed up, so that I'm not able to produce acceptable figures. In some cases, like complex contouring, the differences are unacceptable.
For example, orient landscape; print -dpsc file_name
The v90 plot is terrible, and is not even rotated into landscape mode.
The 2016a version reverts to software implementation of opengl. It seems that this must be related to the above problem, but I'd need some guidance on this.
I also tried print -dpsc2 which does produce a better, but still not good, ps file (-dpsc is level3 and -dpsc2 is level2 ).
I like png files for many purposes, but publication does require ps files.
