Placing a static background into an animated plot.

I am in a linear algebra class and we are using matlab to create a simple 2D animation through the manipulation of matrices. I've tried the code our teacher gave the class to put up a static background image in a figure in which the animation would be moving but it did not work. any ideas on what I could do?
