check mark style of the check box in MATLAB GUI

Hello,everyone. I want to know if there is any possibility to make the check mark style not shown as '√' but shown as other styles(such as '*'or'.'), when we make the check box value is 1. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

Not with GUIDE or uicontrol().
I haven't checked out App Designer yet so I don't know about that. It's supposed to have a richer user interface than GUIDE.
