Calculate % of Earth covered using Mapping Toolbox

The image shows my coverage, but I'm wondering if there is a way to use MATLAB/Mapping Toolbox to calculate the percentage of the Earth that is covered by the red markers.

I solved this by creating a polygon as follows:
area = sum(areaint(latQ, lonQ, spheroid));
And then finding the ratio to the Earth's area:
ratio = 100 * (area/5.101e8);
