Does there exist a way to fill in an object that is not necessarily closed?

I need to fill in an object in a binary image (say a blob), but lets say that this blob has a break in it, meaning that the shape is not necessarily closed (not that the shape is on the border of the image). Is there a way to fill in the object?

Yes, you can use bwconvhull(), activecontour(), imclose(), etc.
