Guide for edge based template matching

Hello, I am a beginner for machine vision. I want to detect bottles in different scenes by using edge based template matching but I have no much idea on edge based template matching. Can someone please guide me through the steps. If you have some sample code or projects on edge based template matching, it would be appreciable.
