using WEBCAM in simulink EXTERNAL MODE

I need to use a webcam to capture realtime videos in order to vision-based control of a 6 DOF robot. the library i'm using to control robot joints, works just in Simulink EXTERNAL MODE. anybody knows how to connect to an imaging device (webcam) in simulink external mode? I could do it in Normal Mode but wasn't able to get it to work in external mode.
