Parse binary record

I need to parse a binary record read (all at once consisting of many variables of different sizes) from a serial stream. Unfortunately fread can only read binary variables from a file or from the serial stream, but in the latter case much data are lost. This would be easy if the record were ASCII, but it's binary. Anyone see a way forward?
