Distance between a point and elements in a shapefile.

I have a shapefile (.shp) that contains geographic points (with longitude and latitude), and I have a geopoint that I construct using p = geopoint(48.86253,2.27968). I would like to compute distances between points in the shapefile and the point "p". How can I do that using Matlab?
