BER comparison for coded and uncoded data

I have written a custom code for convolutional encoder and viterbi decoder.. for comparing BER of convolutional coded and uncoded data, for simple calculation would it be ok if I compare original message and the one after awgn and compute the number of errors. and then compare no of errors after adding awgn to encoded data and comparing original message with decoded data. .. is it right approach..
