Plot categorical data as data labels on an x,y plot

Hi,
I've plotted distance on the x-axis and acceleration on the y-axis.
These values are from a string array. Within this string array I also have the channel name corresponding to each x,y coordinate plotted.
I want to plot these channel names as data labels using the text function, but get the error "Character vector argument expected after 2 or 3 numeric arguments", which I assume is due to the channel names being defined as categorical data.
If somebody could advise a way around this it would be much appreciated.
