How do I create custom line styles for simple line plots?

Is there a way to create custom line styles? It will be very helpful to have control over dash and gap size or control spacing between dashes.I have seen some interesting work around this as in the link:

However the work around is for bar plot, it did not provide answers on how the new custom would be in a legend, or how to control its line-width. Therefore, the newly created custom line styles should be added to legend, should change its width or simply can be edited as the standard line styles of Matlab inside Matlab plot editor. It would be perfect if it can be added to Matlab standard line styles.
