Why does MATLAB crash when plotting on Linux using Nvidia driver 361.28?

I am trying to plot using MATLAB, but suddenly it crashes.  I am using a Linux machine with an Nvidia driver version 361.28.  Why is this happening?
Stack Trace (from fault):
[ 0] 0x00007f7c8b25521d /usr/lib/nvidia-361-updates/libGLX_nvidia.so.0+00344605

Several users have reported this issue when using Nvidia driver version 361.28 for Linux, and they were able to resolve it by upgrading their driver to version 367.27.
