How to Select Number of soft decision bits in Viterbi decoding algorithm?

Hai I am using Viterbi decoding algorithm to decode a convolutional encoded data. I am using 1/2 rate encoding with constraint length 7. And I am using 16-QAM at Tx and Rx.
And my trellis is
trell=poly2trellis(7,[171 133]);
Can anyone help me to find number of soft decision bits.
