SQL database and Matlab GUI

Im kinda new using database with MATLAB. What i'm trying to do is to create a GUI with popup menu, and in these menu select items from the database. My problem is how to link my GUI and my database ?

i guess the easiest way is to use a sql query for specific usage. by this I mean write for each usage a function or a script with the necessary sql code and link them to the buttons or drop down fields.
