Conversion to double from sym is not possible ?

t=-1:0.001:1; a=1; syms t f=t laplace(f) plot(t,a)
trying to plot ramp function's laplace transform but we are getting an error like conversion to double from sym is not possible?

syms t
f=t
lap=laplace(f)
