Color plotting of a plot

Hi everyone,
I can plot curve with a color of my wish(red) as
plot(sind(1:360),'red');
and this works
If i want to do it through a variable like,
a = char(red);
this does not work,
plot(sind(1:360),'',a,'');
Please help
