Matlab solving ode's and transfer functions

I want to know how Matlab solves differential equations let's say when using Simulink and handing over the transfer function or when using ode45. I know for ode45 that runge-kutta is used but how exactly does it start and how does it involve the initial conditions, same question for the transfer functions. Thanks!
