How to remove background using thresholding?

I am using Malab R2018a and I am processing a x ray image with a skull.I want to seperate skull part and want to remove the edges with black color as shown in attached figure .I got the image output as shown in the file attached after doing thresholding.Can you please suggest a method for seperating the skull from the background?
